AI Search Statistics 2026: How Many People Actually Ask AI First

By the alphaa team — we run AI-visibility scans across thousands of local businesses. Every statistic below is attributed to a named source, quoted with its original qualifier, and dated. Where a figure is commonly exaggerated online, we say so and give the number the source actually reported. Last updated 23 July 2026.

Short answer: Yes — a large and growing share of people now get answers without clicking a website, and many ask an AI assistant instead of Google. The most defensible 2026 figures: roughly two-thirds of Google searches end without a single click (SparkToro/Similarweb, 2026), 65% of consumers use AI tools to research products before buying (Clutch, 2026), and ChatGPT serves 800M+ weekly active users (OpenAI, 2025). Below is each number, its source, and what it does and does not mean.

The headline numbers (verified)

These are the figures we are comfortable standing behind because they trace to a named, checkable source. We have kept each one's exact qualifier — "commercial-intent," "weekly active," "in under a year" — because dropping the qualifier is how an honest statistic becomes a misleading one.

  • ~68% of Google searches end without a click. Roughly two-thirds of Google searches now end without a single click to a website (SparkToro/Similarweb, 2026). This is up from around 60% in 2024 — the direction matters more than the decimal.
  • 65% research with AI before buying. 65% of consumers now use AI tools to research products before buying (Clutch, 2026). That is research behavior, not a claim that AI closes the sale.
  • 800M+ weekly ChatGPT users. ChatGPT serves 800M+ weekly active users, handling billions of queries every day (OpenAI, 2025). Note the unit: weekly active users, not queries — the two get swapped constantly online.
  • ~48% of commercial searches show an AI Overview. AI Overviews now appear in up to ~48% of commercial-intent searches (BrightEdge, 2026) — the searches where someone is deciding what to buy and from whom.
  • 1,200%+ growth in AI-referred retail traffic. Traffic to retail sites from AI assistants grew over 1,200% in under a year, and those visitors convert better than traditional search traffic (Adobe Analytics, 2025–26). Explosive percentage growth off a small base — but the conversion-quality point is the durable one.

What these numbers mean together

Read as a set, the story is consistent. The moment where a searcher used to choose between ten blue links is being removed from the middle of the journey. Sometimes the answer arrives on Google's own results page — that is the ~68% zero-click and the ~48% AI-Overview figures. Sometimes the searcher never opens Google at all and asks ChatGPT — that is the 800M weekly users and the 65% who research with AI. Either way, the same shift shows up: the question still gets asked, your business still might be the right answer, but the click you used to earn is now optional, and optional clicks mostly do not happen.

We walked through the mechanics of the no-click results page in Zero-click search: two thirds of Google searches now end without a website visit, and what it does to a business that still ranks well in The death of the blue link.

Numbers to be careful with

A stats page is only trustworthy if it also tells you what not to repeat. These are figures we see cited confidently that are either wrong, out of date, or missing a qualifier that changes their meaning:

  • "AI Overviews appear in half of all searches." Misleading. The ~48% figure is for commercial-intent searches (BrightEdge, 2026). Across all queries, broad-panel studies (Semrush) measured a much lower ~16–25%. Both can be true; the trick is not to quote the commercial number as if it covered every search.
  • "ChatGPT processes 700M weekly queries." Wrong unit and out of date. The ~700M figure that circulated referred to users, not queries, and the current reported number is 800M+ weekly active users (OpenAI, 2025).
  • Any precise "X% of buyers now choose the AI-recommended business" stat. We have not found a defensible source for figures like this, so we do not cite one. If a number sounds suspiciously round and specific and has no named study behind it, treat it as marketing, not data.

Frequently asked questions

How many searches end without a click in 2026?

Roughly two-thirds — about 68% of Google searches now end without a single click to any website (SparkToro/Similarweb, 2026), up from around 60% in 2024.

How many people use ChatGPT?

ChatGPT serves 800M+ weekly active users and handles billions of queries every day (OpenAI, 2025). That is weekly active users, not total queries.

Do people really use AI to find businesses?

A majority research with it: 65% of consumers now use AI tools to research products before buying (Clutch, 2026). Whether that becomes a booking still depends on your reviews, your listings, and whether the AI can find consistent facts about you. We covered the buyer-behavior side in Your next customer is asking ChatGPT first.

How fast is AI-driven traffic growing?

Very fast off a small base: traffic to retail sites from AI assistants grew over 1,200% in under a year, and those visitors convert better than traditional search traffic (Adobe Analytics, 2025–26).

The honest limitation

These are directional, industry-level figures. None of them tells you what an AI engine says about your business today — and that is the only number that changes your revenue. National statistics explain why the ground shifted; they do not tell you whether ChatGPT currently recommends you, hedges, or names a competitor. The averages also move as models update, so treat any single percentage as a snapshot, not a law.

What you can measure directly is your own visibility. If you want the practical version of everything above, our AEO checklist turns the trend into a task list, and Is AEO real? explains the mechanism honestly — including what this work genuinely cannot do.

The bottom line

The 2026 data points one way: fewer clicks, more answers, and a large slice of demand now flowing through AI assistants that decide who to name based on the sources they can find and verify. The statistics tell you the category changed. The next step is finding out where you personally stand in it — because "most searches are zero-click" is only useful once you know whether the answer your customers see includes you.
