Ahrefs Brand Radar vs Semrush AI Visibility
Both tools measure how often AI assistants mention your brand, and the real difference is prompt data versus workflow — neither one writes the fix.

By the Alphaa team — we build an AI agent that checks what ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude and Perplexity say about local businesses. Every competitor figure below was read from Ahrefs' and Semrush's own pricing pages on 2 October 2026, and prices change.
Short answer: Ahrefs Brand Radar and Semrush's AI Visibility Toolkit do the same core job — show how often AI assistants mention and cite your brand. Ahrefs has the bigger prompt database and the higher price; Semrush is cheaper per domain and sits inside an SEO workflow. Neither writes or publishes the content that changes the answer.
That last sentence is the whole decision. Most buyers comparing these two are really asking a different question: once the dashboard tells me ChatGPT recommends a competitor, who fixes it? This page lays out what each tool measures, what each one costs on its own public pricing page, and where the work still lands on you.
What does Ahrefs Brand Radar actually do?
Brand Radar tracks your brand's visibility across AI answers, and it does so in two modes. The first is custom prompts: you write the buyer questions you care about and Ahrefs re-asks them daily. The second is the AI Visibility Index, which looks your brand up inside a large database of prompts Ahrefs has collected from real search behaviour, so you can see where you stand without having guessed the right questions first. Ahrefs' Brand Radar page describes coverage across AI Overviews, AI Mode, Gemini, ChatGPT, Perplexity and Copilot, plus YouTube, TikTok and Reddit visibility.
The two modes answer different questions and it is worth being clear which one you are buying. Custom prompts tell you how you do on the questions you think matter, which is only as good as your guess about how customers phrase things. The index tells you what the questions actually are, which is the harder and more valuable half — most businesses discover their real money prompt is not the one they would have written down. We go through how to build a prompt set in keyword research for AI search.
The prompt database is the genuinely differentiated asset here. Ahrefs' own pricing page describes Brand Radar AI as letting you research any brand across 475M+ organic prompts. That is a research tool as much as a monitoring tool: you can look up a competitor you have never tracked, or a category you are thinking about entering, and get a picture without waiting weeks for your own prompt set to collect data.
What does Semrush AI Visibility Toolkit actually do?
Semrush's AI Visibility Toolkit reports how your brand appears in AI-generated answers and compares it with competitors. Per Semrush's own AI pricing page (October 2026), the Base plan covers AI visibility reports for any domain, 25 custom prompts with daily AI rankings, one domain of brand-performance analysis, mentions from ChatGPT, Google AI, Gemini and Perplexity, competitor and prompt research, and a site audit for AI readiness.
The pitch is continuity rather than novelty. If your team already lives in Semrush for keywords, position tracking and site audits, AI visibility becomes another tab in a tool everybody can already use, with the same projects and the same competitor sets. That is worth real money in practice, because the most common failure mode for a new measurement tool is nobody opening it after month two.
Two parts of the Base plan are worth separating out. The AI-readiness site audit is the technical half — whether the assistants' crawlers can actually fetch and parse the pages you want quoted — and it overlaps with work you may already be doing; our guide to AI crawlers and robots.txt covers the same ground manually. Prompt research is the other half, and 25 tracked prompts is a real constraint: it is enough for one location and one service line, and thin for anything multi-site. Semrush also publishes a free AI visibility checker, which is a reasonable way to see the shape of the data before paying for anything.
How much do Ahrefs Brand Radar and Semrush AI Visibility cost?
Semrush is the cheaper published entry point at $99 a month per domain billed annually, while Ahrefs bundles Brand Radar into mid-tier subscriptions and sells the AI product separately from $199 a month. Here is what each vendor lists on its own pricing page as of October 2026.
| What you are buying | Ahrefs | Semrush AI Visibility |
|---|---|---|
| Published entry price | Brand Radar AI from $199/mo standalone | $99/mo per domain, billed annually |
| Included with a main subscription | Brand Radar listed in Standard ($249/mo) and Advanced ($449/mo) | Sold as its own AI plan, separate from core Semrush plans |
| Other plan tiers listed | Starter $29, Lite $129, Enterprise $1,499/mo | Base, plus Enterprise on request |
| Tracked prompts at entry | Custom prompt packages sold as add-ons (Basic, Growth, Scale) | 25 custom prompts, daily rankings |
| Standout data asset | 475M+ organic prompts you can query for any brand | Shared projects and competitor sets with the rest of Semrush |
| Who does the fixing | You or your agency | You or your agency |
Two caveats on that table. Ahrefs shows prices in your local currency, so a reader in the UK will see pound figures rather than the dollar ones above. And Semrush's $99 is an annual-billing rate per domain, which is the number to compare if you track one brand and the number to multiply if you track several.
Which AI engines does each tool cover?
Ahrefs lists the wider engine set, including Copilot and social surfaces, while Semrush covers the four that matter most for commercial answers. Coverage lists move, so check the vendor page before you buy on this basis alone.
| Surface | Ahrefs Brand Radar | Semrush AI Visibility | Alphaa |
|---|---|---|---|
| ChatGPT | Listed | Listed | Yes |
| Gemini | Listed | Listed | Yes |
| Perplexity | Listed | Listed | Yes |
| Claude | Not listed | Not listed | Yes |
| Google AI Overviews / AI Mode | Listed | Listed as Google AI | No |
| Copilot | Listed | Not listed | No |
| YouTube, TikTok, Reddit | Listed | Not listed | No |
Claude is the asymmetry worth noticing. It is a small share of consumer question volume compared with ChatGPT, but it is heavily used by exactly the professional buyers who research vendors before they call, and neither of these platforms lists it. We cover how the engines differ in ChatGPT vs Gemini vs Perplexity for local search.
What do neither of these tools do?
Neither tool changes what an AI assistant says — they report it, and the work of changing it stays with you. That is not a knock on either product; it is the honest shape of the category. No vendor can edit a model's weights or rewrite an answer. What moves an answer is the public evidence the engines read: your pages, your structured data, your business listings, your reviews and the third-party pages that mention you. Google's own guidance on AI features makes the same point for AI Overviews and AI Mode — there is no special markup that buys inclusion.
The second thing neither does is decide. Both will hand you a ranked list of gaps, and both will suggest content topics, but the judgement calls — is this prompt worth a page, is this competitor actually competing for our customers, is the wrong information in this answer coming from our listing or from a directory we have never heard of — are yours. That is fine when there is a strategist in the room. It is the whole problem when there is not.
So the gap a measurement tool leaves is production. Someone has to turn "ChatGPT names three competitors and not us for this question" into a published comparison page, a corrected listing, a schema fix and a page that answers that question better than anyone else's. For an in-house team or an agency, that is a sprint. For a nine-person business with no marketing hire, it is the reason the dashboard goes unopened.
How do you evaluate either tool before you buy?
Judge an AI visibility tool on five things, and run the test on your own category rather than on the vendor's demo account. Every one of these is answerable inside a trial or a first billing month.
- Do its prompts look like your customers' questions? Type ten real buyer questions in full sentences. If the tool wants two-word keywords, it is a rank tracker with new branding.
- How many samples per prompt does it take? Answers vary run to run, so a tool that asks once a day and calls the result a ranking is reporting noise. We explain why in why AI answers change every time.
- Does it distinguish a mention from a citation from a recommendation? Being named in passing, being linked as a source, and being put forward as a choice are three different outcomes, and a single "visibility score" hides which one you have.
- Does the per-domain price survive your real footprint? Multi-location and multi-service businesses need a prompt set per market, which is where $99 per domain stops being $99.
- What happens in week three? Write down who will read the report and who will publish the fix. If both answers are "nobody yet", buy the capacity before the dashboard.
That last point is not rhetorical. The most expensive outcome in this category is a year of a measurement subscription that correctly identified the same five gaps every month.
Where does Alphaa fit against these two?
Alphaa is narrower than both and does the production step. It runs a 23-point check, asks ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude and Perplexity about your business weekly, and then drafts and publishes the fixes — pages, FAQ content, schema and listing corrections — for you to approve before anything goes live. It publishes into WordPress, Shopify and Webflow. Plans start at $99 a month, month to month, with a free 60-second check at the scan page instead of a trial.
It is also missing things these two have. There is no 475-million-prompt research database, no AI Overviews or Copilot tracking, no multi-brand agency view, and nothing like Semrush's backlink or keyword stack around it. If your job is reporting across a portfolio of brands, one of the big platforms is the right buy. Our wider survey of the category is in best AEO tools in 2026, and the closest head-to-head on price is Profound vs Peec AI vs Alphaa.
How should you choose between them?
Choose on who will do the work after the report lands, then on budget, and only then on dashboard depth. In practice that resolves to a short list of situations.
- You already pay for Semrush and have an SEO who will act on it. Add the AI Visibility Toolkit. It is the cheapest published route and it lands in a tool your team opens daily.
- You need to research brands and categories you do not own. Ahrefs. The prompt database answers questions a custom-prompt tracker cannot, including competitive and market-entry questions.
- You run an agency reporting on many clients. Either platform, with multi-seat and multi-project needs as the tiebreaker, plus a look at the agency-tier specialists.
- You are one business with no one to action the findings. A measurement subscription will not help. You want something that writes and ships the fix with your approval.
- You just want to know where you stand today. Start free. Google's generative AI performance report in Search Console now shows your impressions inside AI Overviews and AI Mode at no cost, and our guide to measuring AI visibility covers what to do with it.
What else do buyers ask about these two tools?
Is Semrush AI Visibility cheaper than Ahrefs Brand Radar?
On published entry prices, yes: $99 a month per domain billed annually at Semrush against $199 a month for standalone Brand Radar AI, as both vendors listed them in October 2026. The comparison changes if you already pay for an Ahrefs Standard or Advanced plan, which list Brand Radar as included.
Do I need both Ahrefs Brand Radar and Semrush AI Visibility?
Almost nobody does. The overlap in what they report is large, and the marginal value of a second dashboard is far lower than the value of actually publishing the fixes the first one recommends.
Can either tool make ChatGPT recommend my business?
No. Both tools measure and diagnose; neither can alter a model or guarantee a recommendation, and any vendor implying otherwise is overselling. We walk through the real mechanism in is AEO real.
Does either one track Claude?
Neither vendor lists Claude among its tracked engines as of October 2026. Ahrefs lists AI Overviews, AI Mode, Gemini, ChatGPT, Perplexity and Copilot; Semrush lists ChatGPT, Google AI, Gemini and Perplexity.
How long until an AI visibility tool shows a change?
Measurement is immediate — you see today's answers on day one — but changing those answers depends on recrawling and retrieval picking up your new pages, which takes weeks rather than days. We set honest expectations in how long AEO takes.
Is free Search Console data enough instead of paying for a tool?
It is enough to start, and not enough to finish. Search Console's generative AI report covers Google's surfaces and impressions only, with no clicks, position or query data, and it says nothing at all about what ChatGPT, Claude or Perplexity answer.
